Wu Li was one of the "Six Masters of the Qing Dynasty." Throughout his career in Chinese painting, he focused on the use of color in his early works, although art history pays more attention to his ink landscapes from his middle years onward. The extant color works are mostly green-and-blue landscapes, light red landscapes, and figure paintings. He inherited the traditions of the Southern School green-and-blue technique from Wang Jian and Wang Shimin, as well as the lightly colored literati painting style. Color and ink are harmoniously blended, and color is applied alongside brushwork. By using light ink in combination with other colors, he made the colors in his paintings more prominent. By infusing his personal emotions into the artwork, he gave the colors emotional warmth and symbolic meaning. The compositions are harmonious, ink and color are integrated, establishing a distinctive style.
