The Tension and "Conflict" of Color in German Expressionist Painting

Abstract

Since the 20th century, modernist art has shifted toward the expression of inner emotions and philosophical reflections, liberating painting from its narrative function and forming an artistic language centered on formal innovation. In terms of color language, this shift has transformed the traditional function of color as a means of representation into a subjective mode of expression in modernism. German Expressionism, which emerged in the early 20th century, is a key branch of modernist painting. Its artistic works, characterized by intense, passionate, and tension-filled color styles, enhance the expressive power of the imagery, convey the inner feelings and spiritual world of German artists, and present a striking visual effect of confrontation and conflict. Therefore, analyzing the artistic concepts of German Expression ist painting and exploring the symbiotic relationship between the tension and "conflict" of color hold significant practical importance for understanding and learning from German Expressionism.
